  • Former Omaha Area Local Officer and Steward Dana Joiner Passes
    Updated On: Sep 15, 2019

Former Omaha Area Local Trustee and Union Steward Dana Joiner passed away September 10, 2019.

In 1972, Dana started his career as a Letter Carrier and was an officer and shop steward for NALC Bay Area Branch 214. After 25 years as a carrier, Dana and his wife Nora moved to Omaha. Dana shared with me that his move was for his family.

On August 30, 1997, Dana transferred to Omaha. In 2003, Dana became an officer of the Omaha Area Local as the CFS/FSM Director. In October of 2004, Dana was appointed as a union steward. In 2006, Dana was elected as a Trustee of the Omaha Area Local. Dana retired from the Postal Service in July of 2016.

Dana continued as a Trustee into his retirement until December of 2018, finally stepping down as a union activist after almost 40 years of combined service with the NALC and APWU, and after 15 years as an officer of the Omaha Area Local.

Dana and Nora decided to move back to Oakland, California to be with their daughter Marie, son-law Andrew Lee and his grandchildren Dana and Helen Lee.

Dana was a Union man, who was at almost every meeting and every event. Dana was one of the first to arrive and the last to leave, working to make Union events a success.

Dana worked on the floor as a shop steward for 12 years serving the membership. Through all his service, Dana treated each member with care, concern, and dignity.

A great Union activist, a greater man.

Thank you, Dana, for your friendship and your dedication to the working women and men in the NALC and APWU.  Rest in peace.

    The following is Dana’s obituary:

    Dana Joiner

Dana Joiner, 72, suffered a heart attack and died on Tuesday, September 10. Preceded in death by his father and by his brother Mike. He is survived by his wife Nora Bacon, mother Lucretia Way, daughter Marie Joiner, son Michael Joiner, son-in-law Andrew Lee, and grandchildren Dana and Helen Lee. Educated at the University of Washington, Dana served in the Marine Corps and worked for 44 years at the U.S. Postal Service. He was an active member and shop steward for the National Association of Letter Carriers in Daly City, California and later for the American Postal Workers Union in Omaha, Nebraska. Dana was a strong, quiet man with a generous spirit. Those who knew him well loved him well.
